The exam, in one paragraph
The Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP) is the standardized licensing exam used across the U.S. and Canada. It's a computer-based, multiple-choice exam administered at Pearson VUE testing centers: 225 questions in 4 hours 15 minutes, of which 175 are scored and 50 are unscored pilot items (you won't know which are which). Scores are reported on a scaled 200–800 range, and most jurisdictions set the passing score at 500. Because forms are statistically equated, there is no fixed "percent correct" that guarantees a pass — which is exactly why readiness is about consistency, not a single lucky practice score (our free diagnostic is built to show you where you stand).
The path to test day
Licensure starts with your state or provincial board, not with the exam. In broad strokes: you apply to your board → the board determines your eligibility → you're authorized to register for the EPPP through ASPPB → you schedule at a Pearson VUE center. Timelines vary widely by jurisdiction — some boards approve in weeks, others take months — so start the paperwork earlier than feels necessary. Exam fees are set by ASPPB plus a test-center administration fee (budget roughly $700 all-in as of this writing; check current fees when you register).
What's on it
Eight content domains, weighted (current domain structure — verify current weights on ASPPB's site): biological bases of behavior; cognitive-affective bases; social and cultural bases; growth and lifespan development; assessment and diagnosis; treatment, intervention, prevention and supervision; research methods and statistics; and ethical, legal, and professional issues. Our question bank, lessons, and diagnostic report map to these domains one-to-one, so your strengths and weaknesses translate directly to the real blueprint.
Retakes and score reporting
If you don't pass, most jurisdictions require a waiting period before retesting (commonly around 60–90 days) and cap the number of attempts per year — the specifics are your board's rules, so verify before scheduling. Scores are typically reported to your board; unofficial results timing varies. One implication worth internalizing early: the cost of walking in unready is measured in months, not dollars. That's why our whole product is oriented around knowing you're ready before you book — starting with the free diagnostic.
The exam is changing (Fall 2027)
ASPPB is moving to an integrated exam that combines knowledge and skills assessment — a single examination with new item formats, including audio/video scenario items. If you're testing before mid-2027, prepare for the current EPPP and largely ignore the noise. If you're further out, see our 2027 Exam Changes page for what's known and how our platform is already built for scenario- and media-based practice.
